Celebrating Legacy, Empowering Determination
As part of the Fresh Step Scholarship Fund, The Joe Henry Dones Honorary Scholarship is awarded to students pursuing trade school, entrepreneurship, or non-traditional career paths. This special award honors the life and legacy of Joe Henry Dones, the late grandfather of our founder, who despite not completing formal education, forged ahead with determination, faith, and an unstoppable work ethic.
Joe Henry Dones became a trailblazer in his community—the first Black man to run for city council, serve as a sheriff bailiff, and sit on the hospital board in his county. A successful business owner, dedicated church member, and a pillar in the community, his life reminds us that education takes many forms—and hard work truly pays off.
